Who needs the yellow fever vaccine?
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Two things drive people to book it: the disease risk itself, and the paperwork. Many countries — Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, Bolivia and others — will not let you in without a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), and some will ask for one simply because you have transited a country where yellow fever is present.
You are likely to need it if you are travelling to a risk area in Africa or South America, arriving from one, or entering a country that requires a certificate of all arrivals. Requirements are set by each country and change — check your exact route, including layovers, on the NaTHNaC country pages, or bring your itinerary to us and we will check it for you.
The yellow fever vaccine: course & schedule
It is a single dose, and for most travellers that is it for life. The timing is the part people get caught out by: the certificate only becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. If you fly on day nine, it will not be accepted at the border. Book with at least a fortnight's clearance if you possibly can.
Yellow fever vaccination and ICVP certificates on site
Brooks Pharmacy is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We assess whether the vaccine is safe for you, vaccinate, and complete and stamp your ICVP in the same appointment — then it is yours for life. Just remember it becomes valid on day 10.
Who can't have it
Yellow fever is a live vaccine, so it is not suitable for everyone. Babies under 9 months, people who are significantly immunosuppressed, anyone who has had their thymus removed or has a thymus disorder, and people with a severe egg allergy generally cannot have it. A first dose over the age of 60, pregnancy and breastfeeding all need individual assessment. If it is not safe for you, we can discuss a medical exemption letter for the border authorities — acceptance is at the destination country's discretion, so it is not a guarantee of entry, but it is the recognised route.
Malaria and the same destinations
Most yellow fever destinations also carry a malaria risk, and there is no vaccine for it. Malaria prevention advice is part of your consultation, alongside bite avoidance.
