Who needs the hepatitis B vaccine?
Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver. It is not caught from food or water — it is spread through blood and other body fluids. In practice that means the risk on a trip comes from things most travellers never plan for: needing medical or dental treatment abroad, a tattoo or piercing, a blood transfusion, a road accident, unprotected sex, sharing a razor, or a barber's blade.
It is worth considering if you are:
- staying somewhere for a long time, or living and working abroad;
- travelling anywhere with limited medical facilities, where a road accident would mean local treatment;
- working in healthcare, aid or emergency response;
- playing contact or adventure sports where injury is plausible;
- visiting friends and relatives, where trips are longer and more embedded in local life;
- planning any medical, dental or cosmetic procedure while away — including at Hajj, where head shaving is one of the rites.
Prevalence is high across much of sub-Saharan Africa, South and East Asia, and parts of eastern Europe and South America. Guidance follows NaTHNaC and the UKHSA Green Book.
The hepatitis B vaccine: course & schedule
The standard course is three doses at 0, 1 and 6 months. Most people booking a trip do not have six months.
The accelerated schedule
This is why hepatitis B is one of the vaccines people most often come to us for rather than waiting. An accelerated course of three doses at day 0, day 7 and day 21, with a booster at 12 months for longer-term protection, is available for adults — so a trip that is three weeks away can still be covered, rather than half a year. Suitability depends on the product and on your age and health, and the pharmacist will confirm which schedule fits your travel date at your consultation.
If you need hepatitis A as well, mention it when you book and the pharmacist will work out the most efficient way to cover both before you fly.
