Who needs a yellow fever certificate?
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis — the ICVP, the little yellow booklet — is a border document. Some countries will not let you in without one.
You will need it if you are:
- entering a country that requires it of all arrivals — this includes much of west and central Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola and others) and French Guiana;
- arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, even if you were only there in transit — this is the one that catches people out. Flying to South Africa or India via a hub such as Nairobi or Addis Ababa can trigger the requirement even though you never left the airport;
- travelling on to another country after a trip to a risk area.
Requirements are set by each country and they change. Check your exact route — including layovers — on the NaTHNaC country pages, or bring your itinerary to us and we will check it for you.
How the certificate works
Three things matter, and all three trip people up:
- It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. Not on the day. If you land on day nine, it will not be accepted.
- It is valid for life for most travellers. Under the International Health Regulations a single dose and a single certificate now cover you permanently, and old certificates with a 10-year expiry date printed on them remain valid — you do not need a new one.
- It must be completed correctly — full name matching your passport, the date, the vaccine batch, and the centre's official stamp and signature. An incomplete certificate is a rejected certificate.
Getting your certificate in one visit
Brooks Pharmacy is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We assess whether the vaccine is safe for you, vaccinate, and complete and stamp your ICVP in the same appointment — then it is yours for life. Book at least 10 days before you fly.
If you can't have the vaccine
Yellow fever is a live vaccine and is not suitable for everyone. Babies under 9 months, people who are significantly immunosuppressed, those with a thymus disorder or who have had their thymus removed, and people with a severe egg allergy generally cannot have it, and a first dose over the age of 60 needs careful assessment. Where it is contraindicated we can discuss a medical exemption letter for the border authorities. An exemption is accepted at the destination country's discretion, so it is not a guarantee of entry — but it is the recognised route, and it is far better than turning up with nothing.
Lost your certificate?
If we vaccinated you, we can usually reissue from our records. If you were vaccinated elsewhere, bring whatever documentation you have and we will advise on the best route.
Same-day & last-minute appointments
Same-day and last-minute appointments are available at our Romford and Dagenham clinics where clinically appropriate, and we can vaccinate and certify the same visit. The 10-day rule is the only thing we cannot speed up. Book online or call 01708 897617.
