Who needs the typhoid vaccine?
Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. The risk is highest in South Asia — India, Pakistan and Bangladesh account for the majority of cases diagnosed in returning UK travellers — and it is also present across Africa, South East Asia and parts of South America.
People visiting friends and relatives are at particularly high risk, and it is worth being blunt about why. Those trips are longer than a holiday. Food is eaten in family homes rather than hotels. And the trip often is not thought of as "travel" at all, so nobody books a pre-travel appointment. If you are going back to family in South Asia, this is the vaccine to have. Guidance follows NaTHNaC and the UKHSA Green Book.
The typhoid vaccine: course & schedule
A single injection gives protection for around three years. Ideally have it about a month before you travel, though it can be given closer to departure if you are short on time — so do not write it off just because you have left it late.
It isn't a licence to stop being careful
The typhoid vaccine is good but not perfect. It does not protect everyone who has it, and it does not cover paratyphoid at all. Food and water precautions still matter, and your pharmacist will run through the practical ones — the things that actually change what you eat and drink, not a leaflet.
